Tooth whitening makes dentition lighter in shade and removes stains from the anatomic crowns of selected or all teeth. Nowadays, the procedure is entirely safe and causes no damage to the teeth. 


Year after year, we consume foods containing strong pigments, drink coffee and tea, or smoke cigarettes, which makes teeth grow darker in colour. Regular brushing may remove some extrinsic discolouration from the enamel, but when some stains have penetrated deep into the structure of the tooth, it is difficult or impossible to get rid of them in the ordinary manner. With BEYOND POLUS, teeth are bleached within a single session: the surface is painted with a special whitening gel which is then activated by the light of the accelerator. The active agent of the whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide, while other ingredients are included to enhance the results of the procedure, and to diminish sensitivity. In the presence of light emitted by the BEYOND POLUS accelerator, whitening gel can pass more quickly through the enamel into the dentine. The light speeds up the whitening process as it increases the decomposition rate of hydrogen peroxide molecules. Therefore, the oxidizing reaction within the structure of the tooth is extremely rapid and the pigmentation is removed. As a consequence, the patient has white, gleaming teeth. The entire session takes approximately 45 minutes and varies depending on the condition of the teeth.


What are the indications and contraindications for tooth whitening?

Indications for tooth whitening:

  • Aesthetic reasons
  • Removal of discolouration that has been present in the teeth from their eruption or appeared with age. To various extents, teeth may become several shades lighter even if discoloured after a course of tetracyclines or mottled due to dental fluorosis
  • Internal bleaching of devitalised ("dead"), dark and discoloured teeth, which is a minimally invasive method and does not damage tooth tissue as compared to conventional prosthodontics treatments (veneers or crowns)
  • Removal of discolouration caused by congenital, metabolic, systemic or pharmacological factors, injuries, dental fluorosis, tetracycline treatment, haemolytic disease of the newborn, hepatitis or porphyria

Contraindications for tooth whitening:

  • Mechanical damage or tooth decay
  • A large number of fillings in anterior teeth, or crowns, bridgework or those with veneers added
  • Poor dental hygiene and concurrent gingivitis
  • Allergy or hypersensitivity to oxidants, glycerol or polyacrylic resins
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Age below 16 years


What is innovative about the BEYOND POLUS system?

The whitening procedure offered by DENTestetica using the BEYOND POLUS accelerator is absolutely safe as it is performed by a dental doctor or a dental hygienist supervised by a doctor. When whitened, the teeth will not absorb further pigments, and the results can last for an average of 2-3 years, depending largely on the patient's lifestyle.





The new BEYOND POLUS accelerator is based on LightBrigdeTM technology, which was designed by scientists working for Beyond Dental&Health. It operates in a unique mode, delivering light from two sources: a very strong, 150 watt halogen bulb, and light-emitting diodes. The light is entirely harmless as it is filtered by 150,000 optical fibres and a special system of lenses. Owing to the leading-edge technology, the two wavelengths from the two different sources are joined and the resulting "light bridge" is free from ultraviolet and harmful infrared emissions: in other words the cold, blue light is safe for the patient. The end result is a combination of light from two powerful sources whose wavelengths span the entire blue light spectrum (480-520 nanometres), which is optimal for tooth whitening, rendering the best effects possible.



High-frequency blue light, emitted by the BEYOND POLUS whitening accelerator, activates whitening gel that contains hydrogen peroxide and other important ingredients. The hydrogen peroxide based BEYOND whitening gel oxidizes discolouration that is present in the structure of the tooth. The reaction that occurs during the procedure is innocuous and does not differ from similar treatments that have been administered by cosmetic dentists for many years. It is only the advanced formula of the gel and the light emitted by the BEYOND POLUS accelerator that make it possible to reduce the duration of the reaction to merely 24-45 minutes, while the obtained outcomes excel those of other methods.

These are the stages of rapid tooth whitening with the BEYOND POLUS accelerator in DENTestetica:

  • In order to appreciate how many shades whiter your teeth are after the procedure, the treatment is preceded by an assessment of the current shade (a digital photo is taken and the shade is automatically recorded with the VITA Easyshade device).
  • Next, the patient is requested to wear protective goggles. To prevent drying, lip balm is applied to the lips. A cheek retractor is placed in the patient's mouth and a dental dam over the mouth.
  • The gums are protected with fluid resin that is cured with a dental curing light.
  • The doctor removes an individual BEYOND® syringe from its protective foil. This contains the whitening gel.
  • The gel is applied to the prepared teeth.
  • When the teeth are covered with whitening gel, the BEYOND POLUS accelerator is placed in front of the patient's mouth. With the lamp turned on, the whitening process begins.
  • This step is repeated in three cycles and then the cheek retractor is removed from the mouth. The patient checks the new colour of the teeth to evaluate the results of the procedure.

What is the difference between the BEYOND POLUS system and other methods of tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening has become an extremely competitive market. Patients can choose between the BEYOND POLUS system and other popular methods such as: custom-fitted dental trays made by a dentist, over-the-counter products available in pharmacies, and in-office whitening treatment with LED lamps.

Dental trays fitted by a dentist provide good, long-lasting results but require prolonged use. The low-concentration gel takes a long time to penetrate the enamel and the dentine and must remain in contact with the teeth for several hours on a few consecutive days. Regrettably, this protracted application of whitening gel, despite its low concentration, may produce hypersensitivity that can last for a few days. Furthermore, the whitening agent, if not thoroughly rinsed from the gums, may cause acute irritation. A patient who wants to use gel-loaded dental trays should not present with any tooth decay as whitening gel must not be applied over cavities, which cannot be temporarily protected. The BEYOND POLUS system allows us to use fluid resin protection to cover cracks, exposed necks of the teeth, CEJ cavities as well as other enamel damage for the duration of the procedure so they can be treated later, following the whitening process.

Ready-made, thermoplastic whitening trays of the "boil and bite" type, which are available in pharmacies and beauty shops, produce satisfactory results but they should not be used without earlier consultation with a dentist. Unlike custom-designed trays prepared by a dental doctor, they may not fit around the teeth well, and the whitening gel may possibly leak into the mouth. Swallowing the gel may cause the patient to suffer from soft tissue irritation or stomach ache.
Take-home products, which may be purchased in shops and pharmacies, are better for colour maintenance but cannot compete with professional-grade whitening treatment in a dental office. Furthermore, not all of them guarantee high quality. Therefore, patients are encouraged to buy trademarked cosmetic dentistry products that have been issued CE certificates and can be marketed in the EU.

Unfortunately, many dental professionals employ LED lamps in tooth whitening treatment. Less expensive LED devices render less dramatic results so in order to whiten the teeth as well as the BEYOND POLUS system, several sessions have to be arranged. BEYONDTM, on the other hand, sells LED lamps to patients, who use them at home - as non-specialist equipment - for whitening maintenance, and not to doctors.

What affects the results of tooth whitening treatment?

Only natural teeth can be bleached. Fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges and other prosthodontics restorations will not be whitened. When the new colour is stabilised (5-7 days after the procedure), the dental doctor, if requested by the patient, may change the old fillings and other restorations so that their colour matches the now lighter shade of the natural dentition. As the structure of a tooth is not homogeneous, some patients may notice that after the procedure the colour of their teeth is not uniform and that in places, white spots can be observed. These are caused by dehydration and disappear a few hours later. In the meantime, patients are advised to drink plenty of mineral water.

The results of whitening treatment depend on:

  1. the mineral composition of the enamel (whitening becomes more difficult when enamel is highly mineralised)
  2. the viscosity and composition of the patient's saliva (more viscous saliva accounts for more calculus)
  3. the patient's diet (food and beverages which cause staining, e.g. coffee, tea, red wine, soya sauce, borscht)
  4. tobacco smoking
  5. oral hygiene

Does whitening treatment with the BEYOND POLUS system cause any discomfort?

The BEYONDTM whitening accelerator and gel have medical CE, FDA and ISO certificates and belong to the safest dental products on the market. The procedure is performed either by a dental doctor or a dental hygienist supervised by a doctor, never by a dental assistant or a cosmetician. When the teeth are whitened with the BEYOND POLUS accelerator (and indeed any other accelerator) or immediately afterwards, they may become transiently sensitive to thermal and chemical stimulation, which is a perfectly normal reaction in healthy, non-devitalized teeth. Should the discomfort continue, fluoride preparations are applied to alleviate painfulness. Also, the mucosa in the mouth and throat may become sensitive or irritated. Upon completion of the procedure, small, milky white spots (0.5-1 mm in diameter) can sometimes be visible on the gums around the necks of the teeth . They tend to stay for no longer than one day (usually disappearing after the first brushing).

How can one make the whitening results last?

Immediately after the whitening procedure and then for a minimum of two days one should:

  • resort to a "white diet", consisting of non-staining foods, and abstain from coffee, tea, red wine, borscht, soya sauce, dark-coloured juices and drinks
  • completely give up smoking
  • follow the doctor's instructions as to hygiene and applied preparations

The whitening treatment results last longer when proper oral hygiene is maintained, touch-up treatments and dental debridement are provided every six months, the consumption of staining foods and beverages is limited to the minimum, tobacco smoking is restricted or abstained from altogether, and maintenance whitening is taken care of at home, e.g. using disposable trays such as Opalescence TresWhite Supreme®.
